Fear of inflation boosts German construction

Despite the continuing financial nightmareof theEurozone, Germany’s construction industry is actually benefiting from the chaos. The reason? Investors inside and outside the country are increasingly looking to real estate as a hedge against the continent-wideincrease in inflation caused by the debt crisis.

Over the first last nine months of 2011 homebuilding permits in Germany rose by an astonishing 22 percent, while those for apartments went up by 43 percent – the most in more than two decades. According to HeikoStiepelmaan, deputy chair executive officer of the Construction Industry Association in Germany, it is the fear of inflation and a lack of other profitable and safe investing alternatives that has caused the rise. There are already signs that investors from southern European countries have started to buy up new property in the German market amid concerns that the single currency might fail, he says.

The increased demand has seen property prices in Germany climb by more than 4 percent in 2011 – twice the average annual increase of 1.9 percent from 2005 to 2010. This construction growth could add further resilience to the German economy as the European Union slides towards another recession.

And while Germany’s construction industry is bucking the downward trend, the UK government has announced it is to spend €5.9 billion to improve the country’s infrastructure and boost construction. The plans announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osbourne, include a €1.2 billion injection into the rail network, in addition to 35 road and rail upgrades across the country. It is hoped that the investment will boost short-term activity in the UK and create thousands of jobs.

Firms face German patent problems

Taiwanese firm HTC has been ordered by German patent firm IPCOM to stop selling its smartphones in Germany. The injunction affects all HTC phones that use UMTS technology, which according to IPCOM, covers all HTC 3G devices. The firm, which sells an estimated 2 million smartphones in Germany each year, is the world’s fourth largest vendor of smartphones, but it has been facing problems of late. Not only have its Desire, Sensation and Wildfire models proved less popular than Apple’s iphones and Samsung’s Galaxy, but the company’s revenues have seen a quarter on quarter fall over the past year. The last two weeks of November saw the company’s share price fell by more than 30 percent. That means thatwith the exception of Blackberry maker Research in Motion, HTC shares have been the worst performing among smartphone companies this year.

The reason for HTC’s flagging fortunes have been put down to a lack of design changes over the previous two years, as well as ineffective branding compared to its Apple and Samsung rivals. That said, HTC chief financial officer Winston Yung believes things will turn around for the company in 2012 thanks to a mixture of new LTE phones for the US market and a number of flagship global product launches.

And while HTC was getting injunctions from IPCOM, Motorola was winning its own patents dispute in Germany, this time with Apple. The Android smartphone maker complained that Apple had failed to license one of its wireless intellectual properties. UK moving towards 4G slowly

British telecommunications company O2 launched the first ever 4G network in London last week. The UK capital joins Finland, Norway, Sweden and Germany in offering the fast speed network, which allows customers to download information over their mobiles at the same speed as a fibre-optic landline connection. The catch, however, is that it will only be available in 25 locations around the city to1,000 Londoners who have agreed to participate in a nine-month trial – the largest Long Term Evolution (LTE) trial ever to be held in the UK.

Initially the trial will not involve phones, as no compatible handset exists yet. Instead Samsung dongles will be handed out which can be plugged into tablets and laptops. The test joins a similar project initiated last month by Everything Everywhere and BT, where 200 people in the village of St Newlyn, Cornwall were given 4G internet access for three months.

Despite the trial, the UK is still viewed as somewhat of a 4G laggard compared with the US, Germany and Scandinavia, which have been deploying 4G commercially for the last few years. It will not be available in the UK until the analogue television signals are switched off at the end of 2012. Even then the UK is unlikely to have its own service until 2017, something that could cost businesses up to £730 million a year.

The new technology is capable of speeds of up to 150 megabits per second, although trial users are more likely to experience speeds of between 25Mbps and 50Mbps. When it is introduced nationwide it is expected to drop to between 10Mbps and 15Mbps, which is still faster than a fixed line broadband connection.

Northern Europe (including the UK), however, will see continued growth in the number of people working thanks to an increased level of immigration, especially in the UK where the workforce is expected to increase by 2.18 percent over the next 40 years. The trend might also be bucked in Eastern Europe where an outsourcing boom could mean job growth and an increased demand for office and commercial space.

Despite all the recent hype over the success of Apple as a global brand, smartphones that run on Google’s Android are continuing to dominate the mobile market at present, in the US at least.

New research published in September by the market research firm Nielsen shows that over the three month summer period, 56% of Americans who bought a new phone opted for Android. Apple, by contrast, only picked up 28% of the share during the same period. This surge in popularity means that Android is now the dominant player in the US, accounting for 43% of all smartphone subscribers. This compares with Apple’s iPhone, which has a 28% share of the overall market and Blackberry, which controls 18%. Nokia, Microsoft and Samsung make up the rest, together accounting for 11% of the American market.
